“Summer Slump”? Here’s What You’ll be Doing as WFH Therapist Instead
“What summer slump?”
That’s what I want you to be saying to yourself for next month.
Maybe you’ve heard of this “summer slump” before: The time in the summer when schools let out, our clients get better (and pause therapy) as the days get longer, and families take off for vacation. For many therapists, this season can be filled with fear as they feel the scarcity of lessening caseloads.
I don’t buy that for me. Or for you.
Summer is for expansiveness. For longer days and freedom to use that time however you wish. Summer is for coming back to yourself and your business with the all the creativity you’ve been cultivating in the spring.
While other therapists are panicking about the “summer slump”, here’s what you’re doing as a grounded, WFH therapist to open yourself to the possibilities of this season
Here’s how you’re going to plan for your summer as an online therapist grounded + relaxed living in your season
Step 01: Remind yourself it IS a season and really, truly embrace it - whether you’re a water park owner, a wedding photographer, or a Christmas tree farmer, a number of professions work in seasons and we’re no different. You can absolutely ground yourself in the reality that panic will not make the season go faster.
Step 02: Start another income stream - The other reality is that you might need or WANT more income this summer. You’re allowed to do that too! You might start teaching a college course, book speaking gigs, start a group, or host a CE training. Make sure to choose a project you’re actually excited about so you condition yourself to associate working on this project with good feelings. A lower caseload also means extra hours on your calendar to work on those passion projects you’ve promise yourself you’ll get to “one day”.
Step 03: Embrace the natural slowing down of the season - for me, summer and winter are transitional periods where you can actually rest and slow down. Whether that looks like taking a picnic at your park or taking a weekend vacation (all your clients are on vacation!), slowing down can communicate to your brain “I’m safe. I’ve got you”.
Therapist, ready to use the expansiveness in your summer to build a new online income stream?
Imagine bringing in an extra $500-$2k per month this summer working from your laptop - and finally taking yourself on THAT vacation on your vision board at the end of summer.
Take your clinical skills to the classroom with “Adjuncting 101: Your Guide to $10k as an Adjunct Professor for Social Workers and Counselors”, my 2 hour workshop to help you apply for and land your first position teaching 1-2 online college courses. Now is the perfect time to apply as universities finalize their summer schedules.
