You’ve always dreamed about bringing chronically ill people together

We know that support groups can be a huge source of connection, especially for our chronically ill clients.

But what paperwork do you need in place to start one? How do you run group ethically and in a medical trauma-informed manner?

Your Guide to Starting Your Virtual Chronic Illness Support Group

“Support Group Starter Kit: Building Your Virtual Chronic Illness Support Group” is a 2 hour workshop focused on helping you create and grow your first virtual support group specifically to serve chronically ill clients

Your chronically ill clients are craving connection with others like them who “get it”. And you can provide that space where they don’t have to explain themselves.

As a therapist in private practice working with chronic health issues, starting your own virtual support group can help you:

➯ Offer another option for potential clients to connect with you

➯  Provide medical-trauma informed care

➯ Run virtual groups ethically and consistently

Meet Your Host + Presenter

  • Victoria Rodriguez PhD, LPC (she/her) (Host: Revive Counsleing and Consulting)

As a specialist in medical trauma and chronic illness (and as a chronically ill therapist myself!), I could not be more excited to host you for this next workshop. I’ve run several cohorts of my chronic illness support group in my practice Revive Counseling and Consulting, and I’m always blown away by the connections made by members of this online group. Now, I’m excited to share the learning experiences (what’s worked, and what hasn’t) for running your very own virtual chronic illness support group.

  • Allyson Byers LMFT (she/her) (Presenter)

As someone who has lived with chronic illness for over 10 years and now specializes in this work, I know firsthand how lonely and isolating it can be...and how much I craved a space where people actually got it. A place where I could be with others who would celebrate my wins and sit with me through the setbacks. That's the group I wished existed, so I built it. For over two years, I've been facilitating a virtual drop-in support group for people living with chronic illness that is rooted in disability justice and the belief that community is its own kind of medicine. This workshop is something I'm genuinely passionate about: helping more people build these kinds of spaces.

Program Description + Objectives

Therapeutic and support groups can be an effective intervention for medical trauma and health anxiety associated with chronic illness. Counselors seeking to start a chronic illness support group must be aware of how group dynamics are effected by medical PTSD and how to adapt groups to the specific needs of disabled individuals. This workshop reviews medical-trauma informed care specific to group work in order to run ethical and consistent chronic illness groups.

Objectives

➯ Describe 4 signs of medical PTSD associated with chronic illness

➯  Identify 3 reasons group work can be effective for chronically ill individuals

➯ Review a case study of an ethical dilemma associated with a chronic illness group
